Citation read at University Graduation:

Wake Forest University hereby expresses appreciation to George P. Williams, Jr. for his forty-one years of service and dedication to Wake Forest University. An inspiring chairman, he lead the establishment of the Ph.D. in Physics, and was instrumental in obtaining funding and developing the design for Olin Physical Laboratory. An outstanding teacher, he also served as mentor to younger faculty, helping to become good teachers themselves. A creative scientist, he furthered the understanding of defects in solids. He has been a generous and valued colleague.
