Dany Kim-Shapiro wins Excellence in Research Award

February 21, 2002

Today the University awarded Daniel Kim-Shapiro its award for Excellence in Research, recognizing his extraordinary accomplishments in experimental biophysics. The work of Dr. Kim-Shapiro is distinguished by the application of sophisticated instrumentation and physical techniques to directly confront a problem of biomedical importance -- sickle cell disease. This disease afflicts one in 600 African Americans, and his efforts to understand the fundamental processes in hemoglobin melting paves the wave for improved treatment.

Dr. Kim-Shapiro credited his students for the advances achieved in his laboratory. He has directed the research of twelve undergraduates in his six years at Wake Forest, and currently advises five graduate students.

Congratulations, Dany!
